From Playbill.com:

“High School Musical” director and choreographer Kenny Ortega has withdrawn from the film remake of the 1984 film “Footloose.”

Variety reports that Ortega and Paramount Pictures could not come to agreement on the tone or budget of the remake. Ortega reportedly sought a $30 million budget for the film that would employ elaborate musical numbers, while Paramount production chief Adam Goodman saw the project as an edgy drama with less emphasis on the songs and coming in at under $25 million.

Ortega, who is also the director of the new Michael Jackson film “This Is It” which debuts this week, is the latest to depart the film project. “Gossip Girl” cast member Chace Crawford was announced to replace “High School Musical” star Zac Efron in the central role of Ren McCormack last May.

Country singer Julianne Hough will co-star in the film as Ariel Moore. Paramount is currently seeking a replacement to direct “Footloose,” which is still on track to begin filming in March of 2010.

Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Susannah Grant (“Erin Brockovich”) has penned the latest adaptation of “Footloose.” Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, who delivered such films as “Chicago,” Hairspray” and “A Raisin in the Sun” for television, produce with Dylan Sellers.

Previous reports stated that new songs are being written for the “Footloose” remake, which will also include many of the hits from the original, including “Let’s Hear It for the Boy,” “Almost Paradise,” “Holding Out for a Hero” and the title track.

The original film starred Kevin Bacon and was later adapted into a 1998 stage musical under the direction of Walter Bobbie.
