ELLEN DEGENERES

We Salute Ellen DeGeneres

We Salute Ellen DeGeneres

Read about Ellen and see her famous coming-out episode as well as her touching commencement speech for Tulane University’s graduating ‘Katrina Class’. Both videos are highly worth watching! Click the pictures below to watch!  Her speech is from the heart and her messages apply to us all!

Ellen DeGeneres is known for many things: her stand comedy, talk show, wit, -now American Idol -among other things.  Ellen has always been a positive influence and used her humor.  Ellen is a great role model and shows that gay people CAN have successful, monogamous relationship.  She uses her passion and her wit to connect with all ages, races and genders.

In 1997 on The Oprah Winfrey Show, actress Ellen DeGeneres came out as a lesbian. Her real-life coming out was echoed in the sitcom Ellen in “The Puppy Episode” in which the eponymous character Ellen Morgan played by DeGeneres outs herself over the airport public adress system.  Ellen DeGeneres’ coming out in the media as well as her sitcom, “ranks, hands down, as the single most public exit in gay history”, changing media portrayals of lesbians in Western culture. It aired on April 30, 1997, and featured a number of stars including Oprah Winfrey, Demi Moore, K.D. Lang, Melissa Etheridge, and Ellen’s mother — Betty DeGeneres. The episode caused a national frenzy — some of the show’s advertisers even pulled their ads — but the genie was out of the box, and Ellen DeGeneres had become the first gay lead character of a network show.

A True Lesbian Icon:
Although she never wanted to be a political figure or a spokesperson for the gay community, Ellen has walked through the fire and blazed a path for all gay and lesbian actors to come after her. She went through a period of intense depression, but has risen to be one of the most popular women on television.
